Broadband Audience At Record High (Nielsen//NetRatings)
Story:
According to Nielsen//NetRatings, the total number of broadband users (denoting a high-speed connection to the Internet) surpassed 21 million during the month of November, an all-time high.
Broadband audience growth is outpacing other growth of the Internet audience. Approximately 20% of the active Internet population accessed the Internet using broadband in November, compared to less than 12% one year ago.
Nielsen//NetRatings is a partnership between NetRatings, INc, Nielsen Media Research and ACNielsen, which collects real-time data from more than 233,000 individuals with access to the Internet in 29 countries.
Analysis:
This is an essential statistic to consider when designing your website. While this increase in broadband users is great news for those who want to create graphics-heavy websites, or use streaming media or other bandwidth-consuming presentations, remember this:
80 percent of those who use the Internet in the U.S. are still using their slow dial-up connections!
Note that this covers all Internet users.
