Fast And Efficient Web Sites Key To Customer Retention
According to a new Jupiter Media Metrix report "Back to Basics: Enhancing User Experience at Low Cost", businesses should carefully assess the needs of their customers before investing in rich media content on their web site.
Survey data reveals that 40% of online customers will visit a content site more often if the pages load faster, while only 20% would be motivated to return to the site upon the addition of a richer media experience.
Only 12% of customers reported being motivated to return to content sites with the promise of enabled mobile ecommerce.
Pay close attention to the statistic about the speed of page loading; twice as many customers would prefer that the pages load faster, than want fancy new media. And wouldn't it be cheaper to lighten the graphic load on your pages? Less expensive - and customers prefer it!
The report also showed that consumers prefer customizable layouts on content sites. 38% would visit more frequently if the layout could be customized; 31% would re-visit a site upon the addition of polling or chat capabilities.
Retail sites report similar results; 59% of visitors want more product information, 28% want more product suggestions and 26% want faster loading pages.
Unless your site sells technological "sizzle" (and your customers reasonably expect to see a rich media site), you are probably better off with a site that is simpler.
