How Many Of Your Customers Will Have Broadband?

Story:

Jupiter Media Metrix announced today their prediction that as many as 41 percent of online households in the U.S. will subscribe to a broadband Internet connection by 2006.

This story affects all businesses who sell to people who purchase online from their homes.

Keep in mind that at present (2001), only about 8-12% of consumers have broadband access at home (the statistic depends on whom you believe).

Analysis:

Why do you care about how many of your online customers have broadband access? Here's why:

  • Broadband consumers use their connections more intensively; they are twice as likely to download music, 50% more likely to listen to music online, twice as likely to watch video, 50% more likely to do online banking.
  • Banks and gaming sites have a relatively high concentration of broadband users.
These statistics all influence the kind of content that you put on your site.

Note: The "flip side" of this statistic is that, even by 2006, more than half of your customers will be still be using humble dial-up connections, with download speeds of only 3-5 kilobytes per second.
