A slang term for the software application that lets you access webpages on the Internet. Internet Explorer and Netscape are web browsers.
The Internet existed long before the World Wide Web. People could readily share files between computers. However, learning the command line interface to download individual files and graphic images one at a time was tedious and difficult. The HTML and HTTP protocols that make the World Wide Web possible also enabled the creation of software applications that allowed anyone to access files and graphics just by pointing and clicking.
It was so easy to move around the globe looking at files that this effortless process was called "browsing."
