Prototyping

One best practice that leads to better websites is that of prototyping, or trying simple models of your website before you make the whole thing.

Some website designers use simple paper sketches, or 3x5 cards, to stand for web pages. Start at the top of the deck of cards - the home page - and then see how much shuffling you need to do to find the information your customers need.

This kind of technique can really help you visualize the website before you spend the money to actually build it. It is also a good point to get your site ideas evaluated.
